Dexterous & Sinister explores duality not as a conflict between irreconcilable opposites, but as a tension through which artistic form is produced. Creation and destruction, order and collapse, opening and closure appear as interdependent moments within the same gesture.
The title derives from the Mexican expression a diestra y siniestra, commonly used to describe an indiscriminate or destructive action. The project returns to the phrase’s literal components: right and left, dexterous and sinister. Through inversion and repetition, these positions continually exchange meanings.
The title also suggests a relationship between dexterity and disaster. An act of precision can contain the possibility of failure, just as destruction can initiate a new construction. What is carefully assembled remains vulnerable to collapse.
This exhibition introduced the altar as a central structure within Cuauhtecotzin’s practice. Neither exclusively pictorial nor sculptural, the altar holds opposing forces within a shared architectural frame. It creates a space in which painting, the body, and ritual action can meet.
Rather than seeking equilibrium, Dexterous & Sinister understands duality as an unstable and generative condition: a process through which materials and symbolic systems are continually constructed, dismantled, and reorganized.
